Hi Andrew,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Would you be willing to help update the documentation? I'm more than happy to help you get started. According to my testing on Debian Buster, I agree than virtualenv is a dependency that isn't documented, but I haven't found the need to explicitly install make or gcc.
What operating system are you using?

I was probably using Trisquel 7 or 8. Maybe one of the pip packages that got pulled in required 'make' if it couldn't be obtained by installing it in the OS?

Thanks for looking into this. I'm pretty sure that the situation with Trisquel has changed, because it no longer distributes the python3-pip
package, for freedom issues.
